A slum landlord from Gravesend who refused to tackle damp and mould in an unlicensed property he rented out in Dagenham has been fined almost £4,000.
Patrick Okoli ignored an abatement notice ordering him to repair the property, within 28 days.
Barkingside Magistrates’ Court heard Okoli had plenty of time to complete the required renovations and chose to snub the order instead.
Last week Okoli, who lives in Valley Drive, Gravesend, was convicted of breaching the enforcement notice and fined £2,000.
He must also pay costs of £1,866 and a £100 victim surcharge.
Dagenham councillor Laila Butt, cabinet member for enforcement and community safety, said: “We are doing our utmost to clamp down on unlicensed landlords who do not maintain their properties to an appropriate standard.”
“This sends a message out to rogue landlords across the borough; if you don’t keep your properties in a safe and habitable state then we will take action.”
